Evoking the Unexpressed:
Healing as an Epiphany
July 8 - 15, 2008
Assisi, Italy

Ultimately, healing is and always will be a mystery. Why transformation occurs, and especially how, is at the heart of countless mystery traditions. Mystics and healers have always understood that sickness represented loss of contact with the spiritual, and healing allowed for re-connection.  Since the beginning of time, all living beings have attempted to heal themselves and, as civilization evolved, have sought to find those gifted in the healing arts to help them regain their health and most importantly, restore their connection to the Self and the divine.

Jungian analysis and many other creative approaches to healing facilitate contact with “the objective psyche,” and thus help us listen to the wisdom inherent within the Self.   Like the patient waiting for the dream in the Asklepian Healing Temples, the Jungian approach also awaits guidance from the Self to illuminate the path towards healing and recovery.

The New Sciences, especially those involving field theory, have adopted highly creative approaches to healing, which in a fascinating way, mirror the healing traditions used both in antiquity and in Jungian psychotherapy. Viewed archetypally we can say that there is a path, a way informed by the Self, which if followed leads to creativity and health, but if ignored causes distress and disorder. Physical and psychological suffering are part of the life process, and cannot be escaped.  However if we are able to discern their meaning and symbolic importance, we have the potential to live our lives in alignment with our transpersonal destiny.

We have learned a great deal about healing not only from discoveries in science and Jungian psychology but also from the arts, poetry, consciousness studies, and of course global events. Jung once said that “the world hangs by a thread,” and perhaps our current situation mirrors this more clearly than ever before. It is with all this in mind that we continue the annual tradition of gathering in Assisi, and this year we turn our investigation to the fascinating and mercurial world of healing. Joining us will be Jungian analyst Michael Conforti, discussing his work on archetypal fields, biologist Brian Goodwin on cultural healing through alignment with the Gaia archetype, philosopher and researcher, Jean Houston, with a presentation on the role of visionary leadership in healing systems, and Professor of Mythological Studies at Pacifica Graduate Institute, Dennis Patrick Slattery, who will weave the mytho-poetic imagination into our conversation. Together, our faculty will clearly help to evolve our understanding of healing in the individual and collective psyche.

As a place of healing renowned since the 12th century, Assisi is an ideal setting to explore the traditions and mysteries surrounding this field. We hope you will join us for this unique event.
